Providen Pharmacy Logistics Announces Hire of Rob Watts as Vice President of Technology
- Software developer and IT integration specialist Rob Watts to join Providen Pharmacy Logistics and manage all technology solutions -
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, April 25, 2012 /CNW/ – In a move to solidify itself as company lead by technology, Providen Pharmacy Logistics announces the hire of Rob Watts as Vice President. With his extensive background in big business technology and software development, Watts is a welcome asset for a company that places cutting-edge pharma-tech and workflow innovation as a top priority.
Watts, who has worked in some capacity of business technology/IT for over a decade, most recently led a team of IT professionals at 365 Technologies INC implementing top tier automation system including LabTech and ConnectWise. Watts began as a software developer and throughout his career, has created and implemented software for purposes of seamless integration and automation.
It was these high-level integration skills that drew founder and President Dave Huston to Watts and eventually lead to his selection as VP of Providen Pharmacy Logistics. Rob will be responsible for Providen’s swift and seamless supply chain solution, ensuring Providen’s advanced software systems work flawlessly with those of its pharmacy clients. He will execute and oversee all phases of telepharmacy as well as Canada’s first and only automated, central prescription drug dispensary.
“Rob, with his intimate knowledge of software integration and automation, coupled with his ability to work in such a wide range of industries and the systems within, makes him a perfect choice to manage our technology solutions,” Huston said of Watts. “There is no discernible end to what the guy can do and he truly understands our goals.”
Watts joins the Providen team at a crucial moment in the scope of Canadian pharmacy and health care spending. Recent cuts in generic drug rebates have sent pharmacies reeling, trying to manage the loss. “Pharmacies need to look to gain efficiencies other than cutting pharmacy staff.” Huston continued, “One way to bridge these gaps is by using our workflow solutions. Central fill and telepharmacy can save pharmacies’ loads by cutting inventory and equipment costs, increasing access and allowing their pharmacists to spend less time dispensing and more time on other clinical patient services.”
Providen’s central initiative is to lead pharmacies toward a more current and clinical-based model where pharmacists can practice at the top of their license, spending more time with patients and less time dispensing pills. At the core of this model is fully integrated, state-of-the-art technology with increased safety and patient-pharmacy communication. The hiring of Rob Watts is a direct step solidifying Providen as a company centered on smart technology, propelling itself into the future and moving pharmacy forward.

Providen to Launch Suite of Pharmacy Logistics Solutions at the Manitoba Conference
- Providen Pharmacy Logistics introduces suite of services including Pro-Fill™ web-based software, central fill, and other medication packaging systems –
WINNIPEG, MB–(Apr 21, 2012) Providen Pharmacy Logistics plans to unveil a suite of Pharmacy workflow innovations and logistics solutions at the 2012 Manitoba Pharmacy Conference, Saturday April 21st in Winnipeg, MB.
As generic drug rebates continue to disappear and pharmacies scramble to make up for loss, Providen presents a wide range of workflow and logistic solutions. Providen’s services aim to improve efficiency and safety while pulling pharmacists away from the dispensary to focus on patient services.
Practicing pharmacist and founder of Providen, Dave Huston, will be on hand to discuss the benefits of central fill, telepharmacy and Providen’s other services. “If freed from dispensing to practice at the top of their license pharmacists will lessen the burden on other sectors of our health care system” Said Huston. “The key is to unlock pharmacist potential and encourage a more clinical, patient-centric model.”
Providen’s central fill solution is a service provided by one accredited pharmacy to another, allowing the physical dispensing to take place at alternative, more efficient dispensing locations using automated technology. Central fill maximizes pharmacy labour efficiency and minimizeserrors, improving workflow for prescription fillings and patient outcomes.
Providen’s automated Opti-Fill II Vial Filling enables high volume bottle filling and inventory management with barcode technology, andincludes a pharmacist check station with digital imaging. For patients requiring compliance packaging, Providen’s Fast Pak 330 Strip Packaging machine can prepare either unit or multi-dose packages at a rate of 60 doses per minute.
Providen’s Pro-Fill™ web-based software provides tools to help pharmacists work smarter and faster, including paperless prescription pharmacist verification, and seamless integration with existing pharmacy software and Providen’s centralized automated filling solution.
“We believe the solution lies in workflow optimization that utilizes technology to refocus the pharmacist’s efforts from prescription product fulfillment to clinical practices,” said Huston. “Together, we can move pharmacy forward.”

Providen Pharmacy Logistics Offers Solutions to Dramatic Canadian Pharmacy Market Changes
- Providen Pharmacy Logistics introduces suite of services including Pro-Fill™ web-based software, central fill, and other medication packaging systems -
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, April 9, 2012 /CNW/ – As provinces continue to introduce generic drug pricing policies to reduce rising drug costs, pharmacists are required to adapt in order to sustain their businesses. Providen Pharmacy Logistics is launching a full range of workflow solutions that allow pharmacists to spend less time with product dispensing and more time with their patients.
Providen believes pharmacists are assets that Canada has when dealing with increasing healthcare demand and controlling rising costs. The challenge is not how much the pharmacist costs the system, but how to unlock the value of the pharmacist in the new practice environment.
“As a practicing pharmacist who has owned and managed several pharmacy businesses in Canada, I know the value that our profession provides to healthcare in this country,” said Providen President Dave Huston. “Recent changes in provincial legislation and provincial generic drug reform have given pharmacists new challenges and opportunities to sustain pharmacy services that have traditionally been provided to Canadians.”
One of the key practice changes that pharmacies have to undergo is to free up pharmacist time in order to provide newly enabled clinical services to their patients. In today’s practice environment, pharmacists are often tied up with core dispensing activities which limit their ability to transition to a patient-centric model. Central fill is a service provided by one accredited pharmacy to another, allowing the physical dispensing to take place at alternative, more efficient dispensing locations using automated technology.
The Providen central fill solution maximizes pharmacy labour efficiency and minimizes errors, improving workflow for prescription fillings and patient outcomes.
